What is the fastest way to delete a social media account?

Go straight to the platform’s official deletion page, sign in, pick a reason, re-enter your password and confirm. Most platforms hold the account for around 30 days before erasing it, so download your data first. Direct links for every platform are below.

Not every platform gives you 30 days

Most hold your account for around a month and let you cancel by logging back in. These do not, and it catches people out:

Reddit — no restoration at all, and your comments stay online under [deleted].
WhatsApp — immediate and irreversible.
Telegram — immediate once you enter the confirmation code.
Pinterest — 7 days, not 30. And logging in during them cancels the deletion.
LinkedIn — 14 days, and reopening still loses your endorsements and recommendations.
Discord — 15 days pending deletion, and you cannot start until you hand over every server you own.
Threads — 30 days, but then a 90-day wait before you can rejoin.
Snapchat — 30 days to change your mind, but 60 until deletion completes, and your data export window shuts at 30.

On the first three, export everything before you touch the delete button. There is no coming back to fetch it.

Even the 30-day platforms are not uniform: Meta states the cancellation window varies by region, so treat 30 days as a guide rather than a guarantee.

Do these two things before you delete anything

Request your data export. It can take up to 48 hours to arrive, so start it before you begin deleting. This is the single most common regret we see.
Check what logs in with that account. If you used "Log in with Facebook" or "Log in with Google" anywhere, deleting the account can lock you out of those services permanently. Facebook users especially — read this first.

Deactivate or delete — which do you want?

These are different actions and platforms deliberately blur them. Deactivation is a pause. Deletion is the end.

Note on that last row: messages you sent still appear in the other person's inbox after you delete. No platform lets you claw those back. Plan accordingly.

Common questions

Can I delete my account without a password?

Not directly — platforms require you to prove you own the account, usually with your password, sometimes with a code sent to your app or phone. You have to recover access first via the "Forgot password" flow, then delete normally. Full recovery walkthrough here.

Does deleting my account remove my data from the internet?

No. It removes it from that platform. Anything already screenshotted, reshared, archived by the Wayback Machine, or scraped by a third party stays where it is. Deletion stops future collection; it does not undo past exposure.

How long does permanent deletion actually take?

The visible account disappears immediately. Most platforms then hold it for around 30 days, though Meta notes the exact window varies by region, and Reddit, WhatsApp and Telegram offer no window at all. After that, platforms typically state up to 90 days to purge backups, and anonymised logs may persist longer.
